Job Title: Water &/or Sewer Senior Maintenance Worker 
Department: Water and/or Sewer
Reports To:  Water & Wastewater Superintendent
Pay Range #15    $17.59 - $26.39 /hour

Position Summary: Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in a variety of utilities & construction, maintenance, electrical, control, and repair projects; operates specialized equipment in connection with manual tasks; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision.

Examples of Work (Essential Functions):
∑   Performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines, lift stations and related facilities.
∑   Performs diagnostic and maintenance repairs to electrical control and distribution systems
∑   Performs locates for water and sewer lines in response to requests from other utilities.
∑   Performs water and sewer locates for own repair projects.  Installs new water taps, pipes, and other equipment, assuring safety, accuracy and the best public relations for the City.
∑   Participates in the repair and maintenance of water lines, sewer lines, electrical systems, and controls using a variety of tools, materials and supplies such as rock, dirt, concrete, and sod.  Unclogs sewer or water lines using a jet truck.
∑   Repairs or replaces water meters.
∑   Cleans or prepares sites to eliminate possible hazards.
∑   Receives signals from other equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, or adjustment of machinery, equipment, or materials.
∑   Loads or unloads materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, and according to directions.
∑   Operates backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, pickup trucks, cameras and vacuum equipment to excavate, clean, and repair water or sewer lines.
∑   Assures equipment, pumps, and motors have the necessary fuel, lubricants, and supplies to function.
∑   Utilizes necessary equipment including hand and power tools such as shovels, picks, hammers, saws, and jackhammers, etc. as directed.
∑   Responds to emergencies such as frozen or broken pipes or sewage backups, storms, floods, or other natural disasters.
∑   Performs traffic-control activities, as needed, and observes roadway courtesies; follows safety regulations on all work zone and flagging sites, including placing barricades and cones; reports safety hazards and traffic problems.
∑   Checks on lift stations by physical and visual inspection, clearing debris from stations.  Repairs and replaces pumps and motors that fail.
∑   Ensures all safety policies and regulations are followed and adhered to by self, others, and the public. Performs the functions of the job without posing a threat to the health and safety of others and self.
∑   Maintains accurate records of daily mileage, materials delivered, and equipment used by location and project.
∑   Answers questions and addresses the publicís complaints and concerns, assuring courtesy and professionalism.

Certificate, License: Commercial driverís license.

Required Education and/or Experience: 
Six months to twelve months related experience, high school diploma or G.E.D. and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in equipment operations.

Preferred Education and/or Experience: 
One year to two years related experience and/or Associateís degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certifications or job experience with electrical distribution and controls systems.

Abilities, Knowledge, Skills:
∑   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
∑   Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
∑   Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
∑   Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
∑   Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
∑   Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
∑   Knowledge of municipal repair and maintenance procedures.
∑   Knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of assigned equipment.
∑   Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
∑   Skill in the use of assigned equipment.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed more than two thirds of the time to conditions such moving mechanical parts; may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals and ingredients that would expose the employee to fumes, dust, and other air contaminants that may cause eye and skin irritation, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions of rain, snow, heat, cold, and a variety of atmospheric conditions. The employee may also be exposed to high, precarious places while climbing on a ladder or in a bucket truck, and vibration and noise while using power tools and equipment. The employee may work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions, and often work with constant interruptions. The employee may also be exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. This position may be called out 24 hours a day or rotate being on call, including weekends and holidays.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk, walk on level and slippery surfaces, use hands to finger repetitively, grasp, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; run; climb or balance and stoop, squat, bend, twist, turn, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Lifting, carrying, moving, pushing or pulling up to 25 pounds occurs with tools, equipment, and supplies. Employee must be able to smell and detect odors such as toxic gas and equipment problems. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus when inspecting work, evaluating defects and using small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts, reading reports and meters, and driving equipment. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken-word levels. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
